THE PHYSICAL ASPECT

Having discussed the Mental Aspect; the Physical Aspect remains as one of bowling’s major category. It is concerned with all of the physiological responses and actions demonstrated in a bowler’s performance.

Bowling Tips : Physical Aspect is divided into two sub-factions, which are Accuracy and Action.

Anything one attempts physically in bowling is directed toward these two goals:

  • To roll the ball over a given target on the bowling lane (Accuracy)
  • To roll it over that target with a type of rotation, angle and speed that is most conducive to knocking down pins (Action).

Popularly expressed, “The objective of the game is to ’strike’ all the pins down!” This is a simple and valid way to describe “the idea of the sport”. Though not difficult to understand, once this objective was sought, you will come to appreciate the enormous effort required to realize them. Furthermore, you will quickly learn that, Action is a bit more difficult to master than the Accuracy factor.

Initially, effective Action skills will be of no benefit to you if you don’t hit your target.

Bowling Tips : Concentrating on improving your Accuracy is the priority.

EVERY BEGINNING BOWLER SHOULD START OUT BOWLING WITH AT LEAST THE ELEMENTARY HOOK RELEASE HAND POSITION. This requires the thumb is positioned pointing at approximately 10 o’clock for right-handers throughout the release process.

Believe it or not, A BOWLER SHOULD NOT BEGIN BOWLING WITH A STRAIGHT OR BACKUP BALL. At this stage, the only proper release in bowling is a hook release. This is a must-fundamental! Do not restrict your progress and potential by starting out with a straight or backup ball. Employ the basic hook release hand position from day one! It is always never too late to start learning from the beginning again, if you had personally used to straight or backup ball.

From the beginning, learn not to stress Accuracy or Action. This often happens in bowling. Stressing Accuracy too much with little consideration for Action will often result in a low percentage of strikes, not to mention the many additional “splits” and ”gutters”.

On the other hand, over-excessively stressing Action without consideration for Accuracy will result in poor ball direction, which leads to random strike and poor spare. Therefore, always give appropriate consideration to both Action and Accuracy.

This does not mean that you cannot stress one over the other to some degree. Most bowlers and professionals do. You can easily see the differentiation of stressing factor for each individual bowlers, if you are observant enough while watching some tournaments on screen. Just be sure that you don’t stress one or the other beyond the points of standard deviation.
